Welcome to our 17th Century Coaching Inn
The Queens Head was built in 1615 during the reign of James 1st of England and 6th of Scotland. Great Whittington was deep inside our own 'Wild West' - the area each side of the Border which had been totally lawless for over 400 years. These lands had been controlled by powerful local families known collectively as the 'Border Reivers'.
With the union of the 2 crowns, the days of the Border Reivers were numbered, and safe trading was able to begin. The Queens Head was almost certainly built as a result of these changes.
Coaching inns were places where business meetings took place. Judges could hold court, there. Goods, and cash, could be left in safety for others to collect.
